The EnhanceFitness Program at the Booker T. Dozier Recreation Complex in Inkster is designed to help residents improve their health and quality of life.

When 57-year-old Inkster resident, Sandra Watley, was diagnosed with diabetes, she said she knew it would be a lot of extra effort to stay healthy.

Fortunately, a friend told her about the Enhance Fitness exercise class at the Dozier Recreation Complex in her home town.

“Exercise is an important component to managing my chronic disease,” Watley said. “Being able to do that with so many other people at Enhance Fitness has been like one big happy family that stays in shape together.”

The Enhance Fitness Program is a free class geared toward improving the overall fitness and well-being of primarily older adults. All adults are welcome-even those with physical disabilities or who travel by wheelchair. The one-hour classes focus on cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, flexibility, and balance training. A certified fitness instructor leads classes three times a week to provide social stimulation as well as physical benefits to participants.

Watley said the class has helped her improve her overall quality of life. It helped her lose weight, make new friends, and improve her balance, energy and mood.

“I am so much more flexible because of the range of motions that we do in the class,” she said. “It’s also nice when you can get to a point when you are exercising and the endorphins kick in and make you feel ready for the rest of the day.”

“The class has been growing by leaps and bounds,” said class instructor, Deborah Morgan. “We actually had to add a second class because it was so popular.”

Although Deborah is an instructor in the class, she too has seen the benefit, losing 65 pounds since she started instructing Enhance Fitness last April.

The class is offered at the Dozier Recreation Complex on 2025 Middlebelt Road in Inkster and meets from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. and again at 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Instructor Spotlight: Barbara Payton Brush Park Manor February 18, 2009

During the Detroit continuing education training, I heard lots of great feedback from Barbara Payton instructor at Brush Park Manor.  She is part of the Mature Worker program receiving Title V money for training and employment.  She has found a new career as an exercise instructor at the age of 80!  Her classes are packed with enthusiastic participants and along the way she has lost over 30 pounds!!  ”Since I have been participating I have lost weight.  I am a diabetic, and my blood sugar came down so much that my doctor had to change my whole therapy!  See how slim I am!”  Says, Barbara.

During our training, Barbara shared some of her tips for teaching with a “mature mind”.  She has developed a system of notes both in front of her and posted throughout the room to aid her in teaching the class.  She refers to the notes as she teaches to ensure she covers all the material.  Her adaptations are excellent for both her participants and herself.

Job skills, employment, positive health benefits, and fun–now that’s a program!!

Congrats to Barbara and the DAAA for the innovative combination of Title V money and EnhanceFitness!

Detroit Instructor Continuing Education February 15, 2009

Filed under: Detroit EnhanceFitness Program — ybcseniorhealth @ 10:22 pm

EF programs in the Detroit area invited me back to do a continuing education training for their instructors. The day was filled with a lot of great idea sharing.  Instructors were able to ask questions about how to handle specific situations that arise in their class and give lots of great antecdotes about their own experiences.

We started our day with a class on 32 count phrasing and choreographed aerobics.  Instructors did some sample teaching and practiced putting together combinations.  Following that segment we discussed how to accommodate different levels in one class and of course talked about some ”storyrobics”.  Instructor Missy Lilje assisted with the training and did a great job teaching this segment.  Following our focus on the cardio segment, we did a thorough review of all the strength training exercises and modifications.

The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan also is working on implementing multi-generational programs along with EnhanceFitness at some of their sites.  I was asked to give some ideas about children’s fitness programming in addition to EF.  The instructors had a great time dancing and being ”5 year olds again” for a short time.

Under the program direction of Kristie Lewis, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan launched many sites this year under a broad and ambitious program entitled Healthy Communities Start with You.  Instructors were trained in August and December to implement this program in Detroit and surrounding areas.  Check out this exciting program!
